School Board Expels Two Students, Approves Lease with Morningside University (2025)

A bold decision was made by the Sioux City Community School Board on Monday night, expelling two students and sparking a debate about the severity of their actions. While the specifics of each case remain unknown, the school district has clarified that expulsion is reserved for the most egregious situations, such as premeditated assaults, involvement of weapons, or harm to defenseless individuals. Superintendent Dr. Juan Córdova emphasized that expulsion is a last resort, highlighting the importance of supporting students and providing them with a safe space to turn to.

But here's where it gets controversial: the board also approved a lease agreement with Morningside University, allowing the university to install artificial turf on East High's baseball field. This decision has raised concerns about fairness, as some citizens believe all high schools should have equal opportunities for field upgrades. Terry Kilberg, a concerned citizen, voiced their opinion, stating that all students, regardless of their district, deserve the same chances to play on modern athletic fields.

Board President Jan George acknowledged these concerns but saw the lease as a potential opportunity for North and West High to get turf fields in the future. The lease agreement, which includes a $495,000 installation cost and a 50/50 split of repair expenses after the first $5,000, was approved by a 5-to-2 vote.

In addition to the lease agreement, the school board approved repairs and upgrades to other athletic facilities. North and East High's tracks will be repaired at a cost of $392,972, with plans to repair West High's track next year. The board also voted to upgrade the pools at North and West High, with a total cost of $586,490. The Siouxland Sharks will contribute $245,532 towards the North High repairs as part of their lease agreement.

These upgrades and repairs will be funded by District Sales Tax dollars.

And this is the part most people miss: the lease agreement with Morningside University is for 8 years, with a turf field life expectancy of 12+ years and a replacement cost of around $250,000. Morningside's presentation also revealed that it would cost $36,450 to restore the field to its original state if East High decides to remove the turf after the lease expires.

So, what do you think? Is the school board's decision to expel two students justified, and do you agree with the lease agreement and the potential impact it could have on other high schools in the district? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
