Rugby League's Iconic Smith Joins Broncos Coaching Team: A Mentorship Move
Rugby league legend Cameron Smith is reportedly set to join the coaching staff of the Brisbane Broncos in a mentoring role, according to Code Sports. This move comes as the reigning premiers aim to go back-to-back in the upcoming season, with coach Michael Maguire seeking fresh training methods. Smith, a former player for the Melbourne Storm, will work closely with the leadership group, including players like Payne Haas, Pat Carrigan, and Kotoni Staggs.
The 42-year-old's decision to join the Broncos is not without precedent. Smith has a history with Maguire, having been coached by him for five seasons during his time as an assistant to Craig Bellamy at the Storm. Additionally, Smith has previously served as Billy Slater's Queensland assistant and worked in media for Channel 9.
The Broncos have made three attempts to sign Smith away from Melbourne during his playing days, indicating a strong interest in his mentorship and leadership skills. Before taking the role, Smith even sought Craig Bellamy's approval, showcasing his respect for the Storm's legacy.
Meanwhile, the 2026 Rugby League World Cup grand final is set to take place at Suncorp Stadium, with the draw for the tournament to be released later this month. Queensland has secured the rights to host the final, while Allianz Stadium will host several significant matches.

The event also included 12 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander participants aged 18-30, who train and run in the event each year as part of an initiative to become healthy lifestyle leaders.
